Sustainable Sawbridgeworth Ideas Into Action
Sustainable Sawbridgeworth was formed in 2019 and is a Friends of the Earth Local Action Group.
The group acts as an ‘umbrella’ for regular activities, like the bi-monthly Repair Café, the Tidy Up Sawbridgeworth quarterly litter picks, the library-based thermal imaging camera loan scheme; Sawbo Sales (the first event in February 2024, for buyers and sellers of children’s pre-loved clothes and toys); Vertical Gardens (a workshop on practical solutions to grow more produce at home); Christmas Lights (an annual project for local children to create lanterns from recycled materials for the Great St Mary’s Church display, and a sustainable decorations workshop).
The group campaigns on key issues for our town:
Air quality: group members have created air pollution maps for Herts County Council (HCC) and work closely with Leventhorpe School on anti-idling measures. We are in regular contact with East Herts District Council (EHDC) and HCC officers to discuss ways to improve air quality in the town and run an annual stall on Bell Street to promote Clean Air Day.
Walking and cycling: group members developed alternative walking and cycling routes and contributed to the 2024 EHDC/HCC Local Cycling and Walking Improvement Plan consultation.
Energy saving: group members have supported the EHDC/Town Council’s Energy Hub events.
Waste management/recycling: the group organised a briefing by the Hertfordshire Waste Partnership and has worked with schools in maximising recycling and food waste disposal; we also plan to work with local businesses and community groups.
Planning applications: the group has lobbied planning authorities on the impact of planning decisions on the local environment in Sawbridgeworth, for example increased HGV traffic from the Wrenbridge logistics centre on Bishop’s Stortford.
Local produce: the group has met the Co-op’s regional Member and Community Relations Officer to discuss stocking local fresh produce, in-store recycling, and has organised stalls at the store, as well as a noticeboard. We support, and work with, local refill shop, Full of Beans, at town events.
Schools: we attend primary school eco council meetings and brief them on our activities and listen to theirs ; they help to publicise our activities.
Local events: we have stalls at the May Fayre, River Day, Gardens and Allotment Show, Scarecrow Festival and Christmas Lights events each year.
Sawbridgeworth Town Council: the group reports to STC at full council meetings, lobbies for their support on local sustainability issues and members belong to the Council’s Eco Audit Working Group.
HCC and EHDC: we attend sustainability events and also hold councils to account by asking questions at town, district, and county council meetings to keep environmental issues at the forefront of the local agenda.
Bishop’s Stortford Climate Group: we liaise with colleagues in BSCG on issues of mutual interest, for example cycling and walking.
