Sawbridgeworth has had an air quality management area (AQMA) since 2015 because of unsafe levels of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) on the main road. Sustainable Sawbridgeworth is campaigning for cleaner air – this includes holding Clean Air Day stalls in Bell Street, leafleting on the A1184 and in carparks against engine idling, and advising East Herts and Hertfordshire Councils on how to encourage behaviour change to reduce air pollution including calling for upgrading footpaths for better walking and cycling routes. Sustainable Sawbridgeworth’s online event in February 2022 featured a talk by Rob Whitehouse from Garden Organic on how to reduce waste, part of East and North Herts’ ‘Waste Warriors’ campaign. Our youngest member also showed his video on litter in the town and the damage it can do to our environment. We organised a Zoom in October 2022 with Duncan Jones of Herts County Council/Herts Waste Partnership, to which we invited all our primary schools. In 2023 we tried to facilitate a joint waste contract for our primary schools and Leventhorpe, again working with HWP. Unfortunately, only a minority of schools were interested. Issues with food waste collection, for example, remain. We also tried to engage with local businesses to establish their waste collection arrangements, with the aim of minimising duplicated collection trips to Bell Street for example. We had a very limited response to our questionnaire. HWP has told us in June 2024 that, under new draft regulations, all public and private sector providers will have to provide schools with separate food waste collections from next March onwards. However, the service will be chargeable. Final Parliamentary approval for the regulations was halted when the general election was called. A number of Herts authorities already provide food waste recycling services and can already offer the service to schools, as can a number of private sector providers. East Herts is likely to offer something similar from April 2025. Sustainable Sawbridgeworth remains very interested in ensuring that recycling opportunities for residents, businesses, community groups and schools are maximised in Sawbridgeworth.
Sustainable Sawbridgeworth attends primary school eco council meetings to brief them about our activities and learn about theirs. They also help us publicise our events: Repair Café, litter picks etc. We have put the schools in contact with County and District Council initiatives, especially to do with air quality and energy saving. Several of the primary schools have borrowed air quality monitors from the County Council project. We are working very closely with Leventhorpe staff and students to promote the annual Clean Air Day event in June and related activities, anti-idling campaign etc.
